Candy feat. Justice Tripp – “You Will Never Get Me”

Before “You Will Never Get Me” kicks into full gear, a soft voice introduces the listen as “hypercore.” It’s a verbal calm before the chaos, mentally prepping you within a split’s second time to brace yourself, and rightfully so. Candy have never really fit into one distinct descriptor, as the band’s onslaught of heavy matter bastardizes inspo from the worlds of hardcore, metal, and experimental industrial mechanics in a way that reconfigures boundaries, whether you’re in the pit or raging elsewhere. Yet, “hypercore” is an accurately loaded keyword for the latest preview from the band’s forthcoming album, It’s Inside You, because it outpaces the physical from the mental in its every move. At that, they’ve invited Justice Tripp — who knows more than a few things about smashing through scenes as the leader of Trapped Under Ice and Angel Du$t — into the hellacious fold. He and Zak Quiram begin the listen by trading spots screaming from the bottom of the boiling pit between slasher riffs, scratched nail effects, and a menacing EBM beat upticking its momentum. Before they hit the breakdown, they’ve already lapped all senses. When it does hit the breakdown, the rules of physics crash hard, putting the whole crew far out of reach from anyone’s grip.
