Wild Pink have been going for broke across their last three albums with the New York band, led by John Ross, converging Americana planes with the wide open spaces of a blown-out indie rock borealis in their holy trinity, 2018’s Yolk In the Fur, 2021’s A Billion Tiny Lights, and 2022’s ILYSM. “Air Drumming Fix You” is a creative reset from Ross, however, and Ross alone. Newly minted as part of the Fire Talk Records roster, he’s situating himself accordingly into an experimental ebb and flow on Wild Pink’s new single in embracing minimalism to equally profound effect. Production is scraped with his vocals muffling and pitch-tuned through, plainspoken. The listen itself glows around allusions to VR, crème fraîche baby breath, church pews, and that Coldplay song with a lowly bass line, a gleam of synths punctuated by the pulse of a drum machine, and a sax breathing earthly air into an otherwise unearthly terrain as yet explored by the band while still offering you that Wild Pink kind of wonder of the world by way of small miracles in sound.
Wild Pink’s “Air Drumming to Fix You” single is available now on Fire Talk.
