To anyone grinding away in the daily capitalist slog we’ve come to normalize in this life, hitting play on “Butterfly Phase”, the lead single from Kelly Moran’s forthcoming album, Moves In the Field, is a reprieve from that weight. Suddenly, your brain cells are allowed room to breathe. Your surroundings become less grayscale. For two minutes and 50 seconds, you’re given permission to fly away from Earth as the experimental composer and piano virtuoso guides your path through a mesmerizing yet a layered design delicate with key flourishes that sounds like she’s in concert with herself (in reality, she recorded the listen by working the with Disklavier.) As always, Moran’s nature is always in evolution.
