In the afterglow of her Golden Hour, Kacey Musgraves spent her next creative phase star-crossed in decompartmentalizing a divorce while also trying to become the biggest crossover country-pop star since you-know-who. The ambition was respected, but the results were mixed. Musgraves’ Saturn returns on “Deeper Well” — the lead single and title track from her new album — to a place more familiar. Though she’s outgrown the trailer life from her breakout years, she parks herself back into a place more familiar which plays to her strengths in songwriting purity in plucking into understated folk-pop and plainspoken wordplay about releasing dark energy and putting her wake-and-bake days behind her. ”So I’m sayin’ goodbye to the people / That I feel are real good at wasting my time,” she sing. As the listen’s energy transforms its natural elements into a cosmic swell, it’s as though her homecoming resides within knowing herself better.
