Since refining their post-punk-indebted sound to be heard throughout brighter corners on 2022’s Blue Skies, Dehd have been on the path of making pop music sound dangerous without necessarily needing to coarsen its corners. “Mood Ring”, the lead single from the Chicago trio’s forthcoming fourth full-length, Poetry, spins like a backseat makeout session playing on the dial of retrofitted FM waves, with its punch spiked with colorful lyrical hues by Emily Kempf. “Get back now, here comes my baby / Tough and rumble man with a little bit of danger,” she sings. “I can’t believe that he’s with me / He’s everything I need, my sexy little angel.” As she and guitarist Jason Balla’s vocals mingle in the basking butterflies of the trio’s understated glow rock, DEHD set the mood just right.
