Tomato Flower – “Saint”

In 2022, Baltimore experimental constructionists Tomato Flower released not one but two promising EPs in the form of winter’s Gold Arc and summer’s Construction, which then begat the opportunity to open in front of wider audiences as they hit the road with Animal Collective. It made sense, as Tomato Flower sounded like the sprouted from the soil of their city luminaries in their tendency to toil in the vines of weird, psychedelic art-rock and colorful pop shapes wriggling about. “Saint”, the lead single from the band’s proper debut full-length, No, wants to bare no resemblance to any other form, however. It renders an even more curious case of the four-piece’s future, letting creative intuition guide their growth down paths unexplored. The journey is a spiritual one at that, with vocalist and guitarist Austyn Wohlers’ emotions battling to collect themselves, translated through kneejerk patterns of rhythmic and guitars breaking brainwaves. The way Tomato Flower come out undeterred by darker recesses and still finding their back to an enlightened air makes for its own miracle.
