Yard Act – “We Make Hits”

“We just wanna have some fun before we’re sunk,” James Smith resigns on “We Make Hits”, the latest advance single from Yard Act’s sophomore effort, Where’s My Utopia? One thing the Brits rarely ever miss on is tying together a more than healthy pile of cynicism with a hook, and in that grand tradition, the Leeds band are doing so in a way that flexes some deprecating self-awareness (choice lyric: “But not hits like Nile Rodgers, just that we ain’t hook dodgers.) Their sound has been fast escaping everything that came before it on this album, with this listen punctuating all of it as them being something other than standard, fast-talking post-punk milquetoast, rewriting their origin story in anthem with an undeniably disco-dance twist on their form.
