Forget all of the shoegaze discourse entering this first week of January with Flesh Tape. The Fort Collins band are making straight-up heavy-charged indie rock that, yes, dissolves electricity with distortion pedals, but the four-piece of Larson Ross, Nick Visocky, Jae Smith, and Jake Lyon are also turning up something that recalls Pac NW influences as well as Japandroids’ early EPs, All Lies and Lullaby Death Jams. On “Gargoyle”, the first single from their forthcoming self-titled debut LP, guitars are in spinout mode with a touch of afterburn tapering behind them while Ross’ voice hovers aboard, maintaining a resistance from any energy attempting to pull him under. There’s a cosmic political message in the band’s smolder just as much as there is a penchant for dialed-in alt-rock that hits like granite.
Flesh Tape’s Flesh Tape will be released January 16th on Power Goth Recordings.
