When Zora dropped her 2022 debut album, Z1, the 23-year-old Minneapolis songwriter, producer and rapper came in fully original in her design of zoomed up dance music intent on creating an energy shift. That momentum hasn’t slowed leading into her latest single “Fastlane”. While the listen’s origin story — playing Mario Kart and reimagining gamer motifs as a means to write a fun diss track — may have unserious at the time, the art is led to is thinking forward a few laps ahead of where today’s dance pack currently is, with the listen’s heart rate surpassing speed limits and screeching its brakes dramatically into the ’80s UK club scene. Safe to say, ZORA is in a lane all her own…
