DIIV – “Soul Net”

It’s been four years since we’ve last heard any new music from DIIV with the release of their heavy resurrection, 2019’s Deceiver, being their latest, but this year, the Brooklyn shoegaze punk band led by Zachary Cole Smith have both reemerged in the flesh to open for Depeche Mode and has sent out a secret signal through the Internet with the new single, “Soul Net”. Found only to those who seek it on a throwback-style web site, the listen compliments the page’s aesthetic of subliminal recordings and a wormhole of trollish conspiracy theories, with Smith singing, “Cycle is karmic / I want to be nothing” over a swallowing wash of ringing chords and a digital deconstruction production that echoes his sentiments through this reality and the fabricated reality we’ve boxed around ourselves into in order to suffer through it.
