Moor Mother feat. Nicole Mitchell & Nduduzo Makhathini – “One for Archie”

In a year where jazz music has been this wonderful explosion within our musical cosmos thanks to unexpected forays into the genre and the collected freedom of expression by standout albums by the likes of her own Invisible Entanglements, Moor Mother’s “One for Archie” — a tribute to the living, great saxophonist Archie Shepp — is like the perfect punctuation mark on the year that it was. The listen, which features fellow legends in flutist Nicole Mitchell and pianist Nduduzo Makhathini, is one of Camae Ayewa more traditional semblances of sound in its acoustic timbre and trickle, though sparsity only emboldens her prose like building blocks unto the ever-expanding universe of what she and her peers create. “On this night, we are going home,” she speaks of the power of hearing Shepp. This is the sound of inspiration breathed to life.

Moor Mother feat. Nicole Mitchell & Nduduzo Makhathini’s “Song for Archie” single is available now on ANTI- Records.
