Real ones will tell you that the shoegaze revival was already well under way last year when we had artists like Cold Gawd dropping instant new era classics with the release of his breakthrough sophomore LP, God Get Me the Fuck Out of Here. What more is that the Rancho Cucamonga project led by Matt Wainwright is a pure form of shoegaze despite the dense, heavy atmosphere and hardcore-adjacency its sound engulfs. If you were ever curious to hear the band turn unto something more lush and clandestine, however, you’ll want to give listen to “Gin (at The Mountain)”, Cold Gawd’s contribution to the just-released Dais Records cassette-exclusive compilation, C23. Those familiar with last year’s effort will recognize the listen as a highlight, now transformed by thinner air and floating above peaks rather than diving into craters. It’s an intoxicating reminder from the heavens that you can’t call it a revival if it was always there above you all along.
C23 is available now on Dais Records.
