@ – “Soul Hole”

These pages will fess up that it slept on @ — the Philly-and-Baltimore-based duo of vocalist and guitarist Victoria Rose and multi-instrumentalist Stone Filipczak — and their debut LP, Mind Palace Music, released earlier this year. But the evolution of their art is coming quick. Comparing the spurt between that album’s muted experimental folkwork to “Soul Hole”, the first single form their forthcoming extended play, Are You There God? It’s Me @, is an intriguing directional shift. Rose and Filipczak explore the energy of glitchy electronic pop and hyperpop cavernously, digging squelching synths and transfixing vocal layers into their canvas in a freewheeling revelation that sounds excitable but also wonderfully weird. What more is that it makes you want to revisit what came before it in order to understand the foundation the pair were laying before we even knew what they were about to uncover right inside themselves.
