Sometimes the discovery in new music isn’t so much about whose name is on the title of an album or a song, but in the names the artist collaborated with. Nate Mercereau is one of those instances. Fresh off the release of André 3000’s listmaking debut experimental flute album, New Blue Sun, he’s using the moment to step forth with his own work on his latest single, “Facing The Sideways Rain”. Even so, the California-based experimental acoustic artist’s moment is a shared one, with other cosmic jazz energy-makers in Kamasi Washington and fellow New Blue Sun collaborator, percussionist Carlos Niño, being in the room with him during the listen’s creation — layering each’s presence into collage folds of instrumentation and exhales — and ultimately collecting as one in calming effect between three spirits transforming into a natural element.
Nate Mercereau feat. Kamasi Washington and Carlos Niño’s “Facing The Sideways Rain” single is available now on Alpha Pup Records.
