When Friko released the loud, guitar-driving single “Crashing Through” a few weeks back, it probably wasn’t apparent that the Chicago rockers’ creative road would lead them down to writing a classical reverie where its strength was in maximizing those quieter moments. Birthed in inspiration of stop motion films and romanticized death after visiting a graveyard, “For Ella”, the latest preview from the duo of vocalist and guitarist Niko Kapetan and drummer Bailey Minzenberger’s forthcoming debut full-length, Where we’ve been, where we go from here, recalls the baroque indie rock orchestra era of the early Aughts in its construction around delicate piano accompanied by violinist and fellow Chicago scene staple Macie Stewart as well as cellist Alejandro Quiles. Noir when done right can have a way of haunting you, and Friko does so in turning their eyes toward the stars.
