“oral” is further evidence of what we’ve already suspected of björk for decades now: she is a time traveler being sent from the future with a vision that predicates sounds not yet uncovered. Her new single — a collaboration with her heir apparent, ROSALÍA — isn’t so much a new song as so much as it is something that was forged during the period between 1997’s Homogenic and 2001’s Vespertine, but at the time, deemed too pop-centric to fit her fashion at the time. With ROSALÍA’s accents in permutating the experimental with flirtations of the conventional in her own work, the listen bridges the timelapse between its creation and birth, embracing the ornately symphonic and a dance dub energy through two vessels syncing into one. “Just because the mind can make up whatever it wants / Doesn’t mean that it’ll never come true,” they sing. Though its origins trace inspo back to a burgeoning romance, its intention today as a charity single to support Icelandic fjords against destructive factory fish farming practices is a reminder that we must always remain hopeful to see better days come.
