2020’s Future Nostalgia not only solidified Dua Lupa’s place as a pop artist to be taken seriously, but she and her new age disco sounds essentially saved many of us from going stir crazy in a year marred by isolation and insularity. We are thankfully in a better place these days and so very ready to embrace whatever she’s stirring up on the dancefloor out there in the future wilds. “Houdini”, a possible first glimpse into her third LP and potential Coachella headliner set highlight, takes flight with that alongside a who’s who of studio coolmakers in Tame Impala’s Kevin Parker and Danny L Harle alongside songwriters Caroline Ailin and Tobias Jesso Jr. adding a certain touch of finesse to its trickery. Of them all, Dua Lipa’s double entendre on boasting ghosting is shaped in the color waves of Parker and Harle’s dueling hues of psychedelic electronica and gem sparkle sheen, giving the listen that power to make you appear you right inside the palm of her hand. If the art of allure comes down to working your magic, then Lipa is its master of illusion.
