Recommended Album: Reverend Kristin Michael Hayter – ‘SAVED!’

Hallowed be thy name of Reverend Kristin Michael Hayter. As the former Lingua Ignota, the next chapter of the Connecticut-based musician finds a new form of salvation in her given name as she moves away from her previous moniker, and in turn, the more trauma-focused expressions through that incarnation’s sound — a harrowing experiment devouring the self through the throes of experimental noise and non-secular hymns — that ultimately served their purpose in helping Hayter to exorcise, if at least in part.

On Saved!, Hayter is wholly consumed by the holy spirit, though her approach here is one of reflection and growth, deconstructing the Pentecostal-Holiness Movement as a means to better understand her own transcendence from what existed before her. She still remains questioning and apocalyptical toward a blind kind of faith, and all the more maddening in her art for it. Stylistically, the listen carries the wooden weight of crosses of suffering bared on Lingua Ignota’s 2021’s epitaph, SINNER GET READY, through her continued resurrection of the stark, plain olde time hymnal formula adorned by her own voice’s mercy with modest, creaky instrumentation, and raptures of glossolalia. Hayter then went onto to distress the 4-track tape which these tracks were recorded on, turning them into worn, warped transmissions.

It transcends their own creation, furthering the connection between the album’s themes on a metaphorical plane, and though the undertaking is an uncomfortable one to behold at times, it is no doubt the beginning of a new book of revelations being written by Reverend Kristin Michael Hayter.

Highlights: “I’M GETTING OUT WHILE I CAN”, “I WILL BE WITH YOU ALWAYS”, “HOW CAN I KEEP FRO M SINGING”
