It makes sense to feature “Forgot to Grow”, a new song from High Vis, as an attraction to C23, a forthcoming cassette compilation beyond being put out by their label Dais Records in a collab with the analog innovators and product-design studio, RETROSPEKT (it comes with a nifty custom cassette player, too.) The London band broke through last year with their sophomore effort, Blending, with a sound that also broke genre barriers at that in crushing together the harder, gruff exteriors of hardcore with the storied lineage of gleaming Britpop and Madchester aesthetics which permeated on tape during their ’80s peaks. A heavier film resides over the listen’s guitar rock arsenal, with the band doubling down on storm clouds and self-loathing pressing weight on its shoulders with a melodramatic finesse. “Maybe I forgot to grow!”, vocalist Graham Sayle shouts at himself, though you could argue that through High Vis’ artistic spurts, the pain will ensure that doesn’t happen.
C23 will be released December 8th on Dais Records.
