Growing apart from someone you once considered a close confidant isn’t the end you imagined ever seeing, but sometimes, it’s the right call for your path forward. Duck Ltd. mine that path from the past through present and into the future on “The Main Thing”, the Toronto jangle-pop extraordinaires’ latest single and first new music since 2022’s one-off, “Sheets of Grey”. Tom McGreevy and Evan Lewis are attune to conjuring wistfulness through their tour de force of guitars sunbent and scattering while rhythms blur in the fast light of their lookbacks. “Living in a loop like we used to / Yeah,” you’re living in an ebb in time,” McGreevy sings. Yet, despite the song’s themes of dividing, the pair are far from alone, being joined by Ratboys’ Julia Steiner, Dehd’s Jason Balla, and Moontype’s Margaret McCarthy in a warm whirr of backing vocals, while Steiner’s Ratboys ‘mate Marco Nuccio reinforces the propulsive changes that inevitably come our way. “I don’t believe in it now,” McGreevey resolves of what once was. Whatever that was, Lewis, and their good company friends sound better off for it in their view of it all.
