We could all hope for some semblance of balance and peace within in this life, but then there are those of us who thrive in life on the brink. Spiritual Cramp’s Michael Bingham seems like one of these people who at least need to be tempted by vice in order to be true to who they are, and excel at it, at that. That energy maximalizes itself on “Better Off This Way”, the latest preview from the San Francisco punk band’s forthcoming self-titled debut full-length. “I’m always losing my train of thought / I’m always inching closer to the edge,” he sing-shouts through a wall of fully charge garage punk riffage and drum brigade. “I’m gonna do it again tomorrow / I’m gonna do it again today / I’m gonna do it again and again / I think it’s better off this way.” Whether you heed this as a threat or not isn’t the worry. What you should be concerned with is what might happen if Bingham and Spiritual Cramp lost sight of the chaos. Surely shades of beige would be more destructive…
