Recommended Album: Broken Vow – ‘Anthropocene’

There’s a grim poetry to Broken Vow releasing Anthropocene just as autumn takes its first significant turn. As nature wilts into a certain death for the season, you could view the debut full-length from the New England heavy hardcore five-piece as a microcosmic reflection of the Earth’s greater environment crises which they rebuke from their platform in a loud, intimidating conflict against anyone adding to our continued planetary doom. The names Earth Crisis, Undying, Chokehold and other politically-leaning bands who’ve done the work in the past have been dropped as inspirations within the scene which Broken Vow are taking up their torches from, but it’d be remiss not to point out that vocalist Tommy Harte has been on the road with Anxious as one of their touring guitarists as of late. Across the 20-minute listen, you hear where the overlap from opposing spectrums of anthemry and heaviness might have been able to mend the generational common ground. Harte alongside guitarists Harrison Sacco and Evan Stein, bassist Olin May, and drummer Max Holsbeke have done their research beyond just the pit in backing their call to arms, however. Anthropocene moves quickly in spite of its heavy-weighted mixture of metalcore and melodic post-hardcore that grinds itself down against stats, figures, and proven science to present the problem that is mankind’s desire to self-immolate in its long con habits for the sake of short-term wealth. “I will burn your likeness / Everywhere I find it,” Harte screams warns every eco-terrorist in sight on “Shift Tactic”. He’s not going to let them burn the world to the ground without them facing the flames first.

Highlights: “1.5”, “Propaganda of the Deed”, “Shift Tactic”
