It’s said that a good read is hard to put down, but when a familiar story has run its course, it can be even harder to get to that last chapter. Ava Mirzadegan uses a few words of patience to sing that sentiment into something more personal with “Book Song”, the lead single from the Philadelphia-based songwriter’s forthcoming album, Dark Dark Blue. Her style of sparse, spaced out acoustic fretwork moves forward only when given a push by her breath, unhurried to see any conclusion in sight. What begins as an objectively observational look at a book is realized to be written from the perspective of a relationship that has nothing left to give, but is stuck on the same page. “You’ve been waiting for me to come around / No, I’ve been taking my time,” sings. The spine is well-worn and by now, Mirzadegan knows how it ends. Sometimes you just want to sit with the good parts of it for a little while before putting it away on the shelf.
