If time is fleeting, then how come the memories of other people we were at once point connected to in our lives have a weird way of sticking around with us for an infinity, for better or for worse? And if so, how much of it is within our conscious’ control? That’s the ripple in the timeline L’Rain is pondering on “r(EMOTE)”, the latest preview from the Brooklyn multi-instrumentalist’s new album, I Killed Your Dog, where Taja Cheek’s existential synapse is connected directly to the way the listen’s building avalanche of synth-based layers eventually bury her under them. “Don’t move too slow / Will I lose feeling?” There are faces scattered across our memories we wish could be right here with us today, and then there are those we’d rather wish away. The conscious doesn’t discriminate, unfortunately. As time marches on, we can do our best not to lose everything we hold close while moving on from what we no longer need to remember, but nothing is promised.
