“Take a look in the mirror / Are you bored?,” asks Reba Meyers in the opening moments of “Mirror”. That question is never rhetorical, as always in their element with brandishing creative intrigue, Code Orange are onto something unlike their former selves with the latest single from their new album, The Above. Listeners longtime of the Pittsburg experimental metal band’s lore might may find this one even more so, given that it could exist on a timeline where Adventures, the blissed out indie rock offshoot which most of the band used to count themselves members of, never broke up. In Code Orange’s corner of their current universe, they’re creating illusions with similar stylistic grandeur, applying hues of trip-hop, dream-pop, and even strings to gravitate you towards its sensation. It may lead you to question everything around you, except how freakishly cool Code Orange turn existentialism into entertainment.
