FINAL GASP – “Mourning Moon”

The deathly hallows of FINAL GASP are unlike the surrounding darkness within the heavy music realm right now, which is saying a lot since a perpetual morbid fascination within the scene is very much beaten to, uh, death. Equal parts metal, hardcore, punk-pop, and gothic rock with a headrush adrenaline drive, the full scope of their recording with Arthur Rizk — who has produced big-sounding breakout albums for Code Orange, Turnstile, and Power Trip — will polish up even the darkest corners of their underworldly sound leading up to the release their debut album, Mourning Moon. Even the lost can be found with it in the album’s title track, as the listen doubles as a love letter for the departed where the remnants of those no longer with us, be it deceased or ghosts of a past life, echo through vocalist Jacob Murphy’s aching, growling anthem with hooks shimmering across the kind of memories that keep you up at night. As sorrow tears through him, he and FINAL GASP tear through the existential fabric with a beautifully terrifying realization of what we gain knowledge to when we fully grieve.
