The dating world is indeed brutal out there, but sometimes you’ve only yourself to blame for your own decisions leading you astray. “bad idea right?”, the second single from Olivia Rodrigo’s sophomore album, GUTS, is glaringly self-aware of this and she’s not even trying to hide it either. If anything, she’s having fun with self-owning her own fuck-ups in slipping back into old habits with something that’s proven to be all kinds of wrong. Its punked up confection of Sweet Tarts and Pop Rocks only seals the deal with listeners being brought into the serotonin rush with her in the heat of the moment, her wet legged rambling saying out loud what the brain is thinking but the rest isn’t bothering to listen to. “Yes, I know that he’s my ex / But can’t two people reconnect?” They may not coexist in the long-term, but it’s only for one night. Or two. What could be a huge L on a personal level ends up being something Rodrigo turns into a winning alternative pop bang.
