Most bands who are blessed with longevity eventually surpass the imperial era that got them there where even their new music sounds all too familiar. Slowdive break that trope and show how the best of the seminal shapers of a scene never stop becoming more curious to explore within themselves if they set it within their grasp. On “skin in the game”, the second single from their forthcoming album, everything is alive, the English shoegazers embellish finer details and visible contours within their orb, though this is not to say that the dreamlike movements in which the listen floats through isn’t without its blurring effects. Guitars are sunstained in the hazy air where Neil Halstead’s voice and brush strokes of acoustic textures interpret the waveforms into somewhat tangible matter. “I won’t know and you won’t say it now,” he sings. “’Cause you don’t say and I will never ask.” Perhaps its leaving mystery be that is part of why Slowdive is one of the most unimitable, allowing questions marks prevail over certainty.
