“Cast into the universe / I can’t live like a man / Never going back to earth / Lately, I want to space jam,” declares Justice Tripp on “Space Jam”, the first official single kicking off the rollout of Angel Du$t’s fifth full-length effort, BRAND NEW SOUL. After teasing a return to a more feral nature with the album’s early premonition “Very Aggressive” this past spring, the track ushers in both a new chapter and perhaps a return to the transcendental hardcore band’s roots with Justice Tripp – now, creating in the after-Glow On of Turnstile’s success in seeing past mainstay drummer Daniel Fang and guitarist Pat McCrory step aside but properly filling in their intentional ethos with a new lineup featuring Daniel Star and Steve Marino on guitar, Zechariah Ghostribe on bass, and Thomas Cantwell on drums – brandishing both the heavier, pit-pleasing energy along with the weirdo pop indulgences of the Baltimore band’s Roadrunner Records era albums in 2019′s Pretty Buff and 2021′s YAK: A Collection of Truck Songs. Tripp, in whatever outlet he has existed, has never felt like one to be comfortable existing within the scene’s more earthlier sonic terrains, and so “Space Jam” only confirms what has been long been building: He’s hardcore’s modern day alien, wilding out in his own trajectory around the sun.
