A critique of modern dream-pop around these pages right now is that most newer artists approach its sound as a fashionable aesthetic to compliment their morning bowl more so than they do understanding the why of its blushed weight and the interstellar motions existing as they are. Temple of Angels are not of that nature, as they are fully understanding of the dream on their debut full-length, Endless Pursuit. The listen acts as a sonically rich culmination following an extended play and coupling of singles that heard the Austin four-piece of vocalist Bre Morrell, vocalist and guitarist Avery Burton, guitarist Cold Tucker, and drummer Patrick Todd pushing through turbulent, psychedelic gazey swells where they now discover an alternative world outlined by a rush of new-found lucidity from the movements of pop architecture. It boasts an impression of feeling vivid within the subconscious, both a balm and spark to the senses. The album’s opener and title track is akin to a journey of sinking beneath the recesses of the mind during its deep rest, only to uncover rapid eye realizations of specters we thought we’d lost and the love they never truly left behind through the exhilarating, windswept textures of highlights “Tangled In Joy” and “(For You) I’d Lose It All”. Still, that feeling fading lurks, and the band uncovers how to navigate through it by way of pristine dream-pop and reflecting light against memory on the darker shades of “When the Shadow Smiles Back” and “Stay”. Sharpened punk guitars are Temple of Angels’ blades so that the lush melodies the shared space of Morell and Burton’s voices can send you through the clouds. This is the pursuit of a supernatural sensation. Perhaps heaven is a place living inside our dreams after all…
