It’s not the mesmerizing mastery of the Smile or dream-pop juggernauts Alvvays who you should go out of you way to watch on next weekend’s Pitchfork Music Festival livestream, but that of the early day set from Chicago hometown reps and post-punk futurists, Deeper, who are en route to something beyond even their own body with Careful!, their third full-length effort and first for Sub Pop. “Tele”, its latest highlight, is reason why, with vocalist Nic Gohl, drumme Shiraz Bhatti, guitarist Drew McBride, and bassist Kevin Fairbairn switching the channels on their usual surging electrics of post-punk angularity for something more warped and alien even in their own selves in a sci-fi synthesized mood board where the best moment could easily turn into a horror story. “I’m in the fields of love / And when the trouble sets in / No, I can’t look back,” Gohl sings, though it doesn’t feel like he can escape whatever is over is coming up over his shoulder…
