So much of what Chrystia Cabral does through her supernatural sonic exploration as SPELLLING seeks to understand the joys and terrors of the universe. In her own singular creativity, it’s as if her music is the conduit of memorializing so much of that beautiful chaos, and while it can bring darkness to light, there are also moments of unexpectant magic to be had in her discoveries as well. SPELLLING & the Mystery School, her forthcoming album, goes even deeper into the cosmos of what energy she’s already manifested, as its collects and reenvisions new versions of songs throughout Cabral’s discography. On one of the album’s initial previews, “Under the Sun”, Cabral exchanges the initial sensory display that soared through the celestial plain on a bed of blinkering lights, 808 club beats, and alien ripples for a rich tapestry of collaboration across a funk of strings, particlized percussion and bass ebbs, intersections with other human forms, and outer worldly synths that further discover an appreciation for this universe as if we were to witness them first hand through her mind. “Silver flashes, a new star,” her whispers echo even further into the infinite beyond that where she first began this journey. Even if we can’t physically see it, SPELLLING brings us closer to what might be out there.
