We have Olivia Rodrigo, with all her post-Swfitian Paramore-isms, to thank for solidifying alternative pop as a force to reckon with right now. The stakes are high leading into GUTS, her hotly anticipated sophomore follow-up to her 2021 breakout debut, SOUR, but she’s not sweating showing her cards in full just yet with its first single “vampire”. The story here sounds familiar, but brings us up to speed as to everything that’s happened in her life since season one: some fame fucker has done her wrong, and she’s out for blood rather than letting herself get bled dry by another another opportunistic dude. Rodridgo has teased GUTS as a darker affair, yet she and former emo band guy and songwriting cohort Dan Nigro aren’t ready to get full-on heavy just yet with that, somewhat retreading the wheels that set Rodrigo’s ascent into motion with “Driver’s License” with a little more speed behind the gas pedal. If SOUR was all misery business, then perhaps “vampire” is her way of welcoming us to the looming black parade…
