If you’ve got that unsettling suspicion that free will is a great big lie and that we’re all being intricately manipulated by forces much more complicated to comprehend in our day to days – or as Travis Johnson describes as “whatever the Lord is” – then he and Activity do not necessarily help in silence those voices of unease within our heads on “Department of Blood”. As the second single from Spirit in the Room, the sophomore effort from the Brooklyn experimental rockers featuring Johnson and fellow former Grooms-man in drummer Steve Levine alongside guitarist Jess Rees (also of Russian Baths) and bassist Bri DiGioia, the listen buds ambient and beyond the physical from inception in its capillary pulsations. Faint echoes transfix their siren song subconsciously from what rests on the surface level. This circulatory system holding what you know to be reality becomes all the more complex the deeper you attempt to follow it back to its source until eventually, you’re drowning in every direction from your own thoughts, begging the question: Can you even trust yourself?
Directed by: Travis Johnson
Activity’s Spirit in the Room will be released August 4th on Western Vinyl.
