Man, Spiritual Cramp really aren’t having it with poseur culture and how it all comes to the surface on our phones. After being left on read with their recent single, “Phone Lines Down”, the Bay Area garage-punks have resolved to just smash it all on “Nah, That Ain’t It”, the B-side to their forthcoming 7″ single. Through the static signals of its opening moments, vocalist Michael Bingham’s morbid desires are made perfectly clear up front: “I want to throw a rock / Crack your skull / Kick you out of rock ‘n roll / Then everyone we know will see / You’re not so much better than me.” His voice is ghoulish, befitting of his roots in the gothy post-punk outfit Creative Adult, but he and the band are also basking in the sunshine beaming through his bloody intents in their version of Aughts blog rock (think the post-Strokes wave of bands like Hot Fuss-era the Killers’ or Elefant) without the performative fashion statements. They can play the game just as well, just without needing to pretend to be something they ain’t.
