Mandy, Indiana – “Drag [Crashed]”

If Valentine Caulfield’s therapist is reading, you should know she’s very much doing the work in utilizing her anger to the furthest extent within her creative liberties on “Drag [Crashed]”, the final single from Mandy, Indiana’s hotly anticipated debut full-length, i’ve seen a way. That must have been especially easy for her to exorcise here, as this one gets personal quick as the vocalist from the Manchester-based experimental dance-noise band skewers years of unsolicited advice from men on being a woman she’s been forced to entertain since she was old enough to walk. But before we get there, Mandy, Indiana entice you into their trap. Much like the caverns and crypts the album was recorded in, the listen winds you through a hypnotizing path where your fate awaits. “She’s gonna pop some fly buttons / You going to need a gun to fend off the boys,” Caulfield sneers in the face of all those who find her there through her French tongue. And then, the attack in the form of the bait’s switch: industrial claws maul away invitations of smiles and shred lips apart better left shut. When the dead silence on the other end is literal, Caulfield can finally have her peace.
