We all, to an extent, are products of our upbringings. As we get older, however, we come to the realization that what was instilled in us from a very early age was keeping us away from the experiencing not only this life as it should, but ourselves as we truly are. “Free”, the latest single from Gumm’s debut album, Slogan Machine, ravages those patterns of thought and hears the Chattanooga hardcore-punk band in the midst of tearing down those barriers keeping us from seeing it all clearly. In the spirit of the scuzzy existential vitriol of Rohnert Park-era CEREMONY, the five-piece of vocalist Drew Waldon, guitarists Dylan Mikres and Trevor Lynch, bassist Philip Amos, and drummer Harrison Battles are seething in place, inverting frustrations through their steady buzzsaw of riffs and cataclysmic stomp. “I’m not free!,” Waldon still realizes, head held up against the bars. But in any second, he’ll just smash through them.
