Deeper – “Sub”

If the path to insanity is made from repetition, then one must wonder if the sensation that is becoming numb to it all a circular one. “Sub”, Deeper’s newest single and their formal entry onto the Sub Pop roster after releasing a coupling of excellent albums for the Brooklyn-based indie label, Fire Talk, rotates brainwaves, the senses, and their clean-cut circuitry into this pattern to test the theory. “Caught doing circles / I’m feeling ambivalent / I’m feeling the violence / Is it autonomy?,” asks vocalist and guitarist Nic Gohl. As the centripetal force created by the Chicago post-punk four-piece hastens and skids their own velocity within the current, you can’t help but feel off-kilter by its gravity. The world keeps spinning around us, for better or for worse, and while it rotates an inescapable cycle of bad things on its axis, its effects are absolutely dizzying than one of apathetic stagnancy.
