Beach Fossils were doing the punk-music-with-dreamy-pop-guitars aesthetic a full decade before the rest of the independent rock scene – ranging from those in bedrooms to hardcore pits – caught onto the vibe and managed to find success by the tenfold than the Brooklyn band did at their buzz band peak. “Dare Me”, the second single from Bunny, Beach Fossils’ first new album in six years, states a claim for deserved cred of their influence where due, and it all comes down to veteran craft. Now in their 14th year as a band, Dustin Payseur and company have refined every corner in their sound where its balm and restraint in aggression fit the energy of a late night breaking up fights, chilling with friends, and the burgeoning oxytocin rush of new romance to a tee. “Kill the cliché / For a moment / And I’ll tell it like it is,” Payseur sings, just as he the band always has in never sounding like anyone but themselves.
