In the advent of the Chicago scene’s new wave of indie rock cracking through the frame of bands like Horsegirl and Lifeguard, there’s an interesting observation of many of these artists who in the formative days of their youth already sound hyper-aware of how fast life comes at you, and pack a sound that reflects music beyond their years compared to many of their similarly-aged peers for it. On “Chrimson to Chrome”, the latest single from the trio Friko, lead vocalist and guitarist Niko Kapetan proclaims, “We’re either too old, too bold or stupid to move I guess we’re / Caught on the wrong side of the shoe again.” The chorus is set in front of a moment that Kapetan alongside bassist Luke Stamos and drummer Bailey Minzenberger even feel is hurrying away from them, guitars and a steady rumble pressing time into a faster swirl. When viewed against its accompanying music video collaging together memories from their first headlining tour, it puts into perspective how those best days go by in a blink of an eye.
