Sometimes the violence of hardcore is an energy ruminating from a place within and the focus of it isn’t toward the world around you, but directly in the mirror of the self. “FTS (KYS)”, the latest preview off DRAIN’s sophomore effort, LIVING PROOF, is a thrash detox from the Santa Cruz trio where the chug of singed power chords and cratering breakdown results in a self-immolation for one’s own betterment. “Find the strength / And kill yourself / Reinvent the new you,” vocalist Sammy Ciaramitaro scrapes his way through the pit. “Find the strength / And kill all the parts / That you don’t love.” The listen may sound like an in-progress destruction about self-destruction, but leaves a stronger foundation in its wake.
