Vulture Feather – “Inseparable”

The Baltimore band Wilderness were a singular outlier against anything around them upon their arrival in the Aughts. Their sound defied the typical angles of post-punk with a tempered restraint and a billowing combustibility, and through the tandem of vocalist James Johnson and guitarist Colin McCann’s morose sung-spoken howls, it oft came together through a slow-building cathedral of art rock. Three albums into their career, the band seemingly fell off the earth altogether. A near death experience and 15 years later, however, parts of the band rebirth themselves now as Vulture Feather, led by McCann and Wilderness bassist Brian Gossman alongside drummer Eric Fiscus. “Inseparable”, the lead single from the now Hayford, California-based trio’s debut full-length, Liminal Fields, very much reflects a reentry into our atmosphere: Silver-fleshed guitars burn through clouds and break color into dark sky. “It’s fading now / Turned inside out / A strand of rainbow light,” McCann declares with a newfound purpose. On the other side of the storm, he and Vulture Feather’s bring radical spirits back into this earthly experience.
