Recommended Album: Fucked Up – ‘One Day’

Fucked Up – a hardcore-punk band who has been around for the better part of this century and can be credited in helping transcend one of the most gruff of genres over into art-friendly spaces – has consistently been a great band, but since their universally acclaimed epic in 2011′sDavid Comes to Life, it’s been telling that they’ve poured a lot of thought into besting themselves. It turns out removing overthinking the process from the equation was what they really needed.

Written and recorded within the span of a single day,One Day, the Toronto band’s sixth full-length effort, hears vocalist Damian Abraham, guitarist and vocalist Mike Haliechuk, guitarist Josh Zucker, bassist Sandy Miranda, and drummer Jonah Falco returning to their early intuitions in some ways with a more primal punk sound, but also not throwing caution to creative risks either in channeling the anthemically theatrical or sonically nuanced of their later selves in turns to shoegaze and power-pop. They’ve made the most of their 24 hours here, mirroring an intention on how we should all be living: The best version of our selves.

Highlights: “Lords of Kensington”, “Broken Little Boys”, “Cicada”

Fucked Up’s One Day will be released January 27th on Merge Records.
