“Give me one more day / Let me hear you say / I remember you, my friend / Your song will never end,” sings Mike Haliechuk in elegy on “Cicada”, the latest and final preview from One Day. It’s arguably one of the most outright tearjerker-worthy punk jams and an absolute gem in Fucked Up’s entire catalog, and the fact it was written and recorded all in a day’s time makes the emotion all the more pure. This one stands out as an anomaly from the rest of the band’s work (don’t they all really…) with guitarist Haliechuk leading off vocals and Damian Abraham’s bellow echoing from behind, building a memorial over a listen that itself is embedded in a buzzing, melodic post-hardcore melody churning like our own memory.
