Mandy, Indiana tantalize the senses in a way that takes the listeners to the brink of something possibly villainous. Or maybe it’s an escape to some place better. “Injury Detail”, the first new music since the Manchester experimental dance-noise band’s 2021 breakthrough debut EP, …, further explores that edge by enclosing the dualistic rapture of screeching guitars and conductive light energy within a confined space. “Joueur 1 / Preparez-vous,” vocalist Valentine Caulfield sings in French, turning she, guitarist Scott Fair, synthesizer Scott Catling and drummer Alex Macdougall’s altered zone into something more akin to a twisted video game instructional set in reality. “Rien n’est vrai / Tout est permis / Achevez votre adversarie,” or rather translates to “Nothing is true / Everything is allowed / Finish off your opponent.” Disorientation seems to be the only known in Mandy, Indiana’s world of unknowns here.
