“Nothing on This Earth Can Make Me Smile”, the latest single from Dougie Poole’s forthcoming third full-length album, The Rainbow Wheel of Death, has the ability to point out a beautiful picture without overseeing the doom and gloom surrounding it. It’s as if the Brooklyn cosmic country crooner’s perspective on watching every miracles right before his eyes can’t invert the wry frown that seemingly eggs on a self-apocalypse. “I’ve seen the plague of locusts, a plague of lies / An ocean split right down the middle / Ain’t that nice?,” he sings. “But nothing in this world can make me smile.” In his delivery, Poole’s voice carries over fingerpicking and pedal steel with a calm warmth that reveals how even when we see the world around us in all its rose-tinted nature, there’s still plenty of ways for us to accept our own shades of gray muddying it.
Dougie Poole’s The Rainbow Wheel of Death will be released February 24th on Wharf Cat Records.
