Al Mundo Azul, last year’s fourth full-length release from Mr Twin Sister, heard the New York City band slowing down their tempo in favor of hazier movements in the abstracted light of pandemic times. After giving the music world some of this century’s finest examples of danceable avant pop, it was a welcome shift, though somewhat of a comedown compared to their previous steps forward. Upright and Even, a four-song EP which includes tracks recorded in adjacent to its predecessor, suggests that Mr Twin Sister are still at their best when they’re embracing more uninhibited ambitions, however. Stretching and contorting their musical limbs further out into dark club spaces, its centerpiece “Resort” and closing title track absorb themselves in ecstasy and a lounge sophisticate whereas its surrounding parts, the jazz molecularizing “Tommie” and Andrea Estella’s sticky Spanish electro-funk ballad “Me Contuviste”, bind unexpected motions together. There’s nothing still or symmetrical about this extended play, even if by the band’s own titular definition, and it’s what continues to make Mr Twin Sister remarkable in their instincts.
