Jamila Woods – “Boundaries”

After transcending contemporary R&B and soulful meditations and homages against a modernist backdrop with 2020′s highlight, LEGACY! LEGACY!, “Boundaries” is something different in its soundscape from songwriter, poet and activist Jamila Woods, but no less reflective on the self’s best practices with the world around her. The listen is soft in its touches, built around a blush of Spanish guitars easing into Woods’ grooves, even if her words are in conflict with its feeling. “I keep you on the outside / From far enough away you seem pristine,” she sings. “There’ll never be a downside / I’d hate to find a reason I should leave.” It’s her way of keeping comforts close, even when they’re beyond her typical zone.

Jamila Woods’ “Boundaries” single is available now on Jagjaguwar.
