The clock has struck Taylor Swift’s Midnights, and her 10th full-length album, a fever dream of late-night, slow-burning pop produced by Jack Antonoff, is here. Among the immediate standouts in both precision and lyrical form is the one which spans the best parts of the Swiftian pop discog universe from 1989 into evermore. “Anti-Hero”, its first official single, is one which hears Swift at her most specifically quotable for the introspective (“I’ll stare directly at the sun, but never in the mirror…,”) for optimal meme (”Sometimes, I feel like everybody is a sexy baby / And I’m a monster on the hill…,”) and curiously deprecating (”It’s me / Hi / I’m the problem, it’s me…”) Orbed in a soft banger, if it’s what keeps you up at night as well, consider those voices of self-doubt in perfect company here…
