Much like their brooding Brooklyn peers in Russian Baths, Big Bliss are suffering from a strange night of sleep. Unlike the quiet sound of entrapment captured on “Done and Dead”, however, “Sleep Paralysis”, the first new music from the trio of brothers Tim and Cory Race, and Rose Blanshei’s new album, Vital Return, communicates a beautiful texture of panicked impulses. Spanning a timeline, the listen seamlessly needles Joy Division, R.E.M., Jimmy Eat World and Interpol together in riveting form throughout the body upon a spectral experience with the gone and beloved. “Am I coming undone? See your shape in the doorway / Am I falling or not? Will I wake before landing,” sings Tim. “When I do, you’ll be gone, we put your things on the table / An impossible thought, any trace of survival.” In this instance, it’s a rare kind of inner body experience you don’t want to end.
